FAQ

What is a study association?

A study association is an association for students who follow a specific study program, for FMF this means students of (Applied) Mathematics/Physics and Astronomy and related Master programs. The association has multiple purposes for its members; support in education, organizing social events, providing insights into future career paths, etc. The members of a study association are characterized by their study program, contrary to a student association in which the members' study program is not relevant. Joining a study association gives an extra dimension to your student life in Groningen!

Note: As a study association new members do not have to take part in a hazing (ontgroening in Dutch).

Can I join a committee?

That is possible! All committees have applications at the beginning of the academic year. Don't worry if you miss it, just contact our Commissioner of Internal Affairs or send and email to the committee. If you have a question for one of the committees, you can always send them an e-mail or send it to our Commissioner of Internal Affairs. The committees e-mail addresses can be found here.

Why joing a committee?

Many of our activities are organized by voluntary work from committee members. Joining a committee is a good opportunity to get to know your fellow students as well as improve your resume.

We can easily say that without our amazing active members, the association would have far few activities.

How much time requires?

Being a member of most committees requires on average a few hours per week (usually around 1-2h). This is strictly an average, and it may be not true. There are some factors that influence the time you should invest:

  • The committee you are in;
  • The type of role you have (Chair, treasurer, etc...);
  • The vicinity of an event;
  • Unpredictable circumstances.

Of course, it is volunteer work, so in general, you can decide on the amount of time to dedicate to our community. Also, you are always free to leave the committee whenever you have to (by first informing the committee's chair and the Intern).

Where is the FMF?

The FMF members room, also called NSFW (5111.0053), is located in the Physics and Chemistry building of the University of Groningen on the Zernike campus in Groningen, behind the cafeteria. When entering the cafeteria go towards the end, then on the left you will see a door go through it and go straight through the second door in front. Then the members room is just at the end of the hallway on the right. You can't miss it, you will see people coming in-and-out, chilling on the couches and posters all around. See you there! :)

How can I deregister from the FMF?

We apologize for learning of your desire to depart from our organization, but we're pleased to hear that you have presumably finished your studies. Should this be the case, please be aware that you can still join us as an alumni member. Regardless, kindly reach out to the secretary at secretary@fmf.nl and indicate your full name while using the subject line "Ending membership" to initiate the process. The cancellation is finalized only when you receive a confirmation from the secretary. If you do not receive it after two weeks, then send a reminder.

Where can I find the Terms and Conditions and any other legal document?

The Terms and Conditions can be found under "About Us", folder "Legal documents". On this page, you can also find the Privacy Policy and Policy of Undesirable Bahavious. If you are looking for GMA documents, Internal Regulations, etc... you need to look into MijFMF -> MyDrive.
